Certsure/ NICEIC/ ELECSA Part P Assessment – Knocked out the park!

We did it!! Rob and I had a gruelling day for our first Part P assessment. We were ready over an hour earlier than we needed to be an both of us were nervous and pacing the room. We agreed next time to get the AM slot.

Paul Gavin was our assessor, and what a lovely man he is! Drove all the way from Sunny Swansea to undertake today’s assessment. Bless him, he was aware of the difficulties we had had from the start and had gone out of his way to help the assessment run as smoothly as possible today.

We got a lot of praise for completing and submitting ALL the relevant paperwork promptly and electronically which enabled him to update the records as much as possible. Removing Darren from the company as both Principal Duty Holder and Qualifying Supervisor- generated a lot of additional form filling.

I really appreciated Rob being there for the duration of the assessment as it wasn’t as clear cut as I had expected. I thought I would be fired a load of questions and then it would be his turn. Luckily, we were able to support and answer questions showing our full knowledge an understanding of how the company operates. I was really proud to be fair.

We were asked to show the following in no order- and of no real relevance other than to portray how much we were grilled:

  • Company copy of Part P Building Regs
  • Complaints log
  • Electrical Certificates, Part P Notification, data sheets, invoices and operator’s manual for the site being assessed
  • Electrical Certificates, Part P notification, data sheets, invoices and operator’s manual for another site chosen at random
  • Multiple Electrical Certificates to show a variety of works undertaken- backed up with showing the Part P notification
  • GS38 Documentation
  • Company Health and Safety Policy
  • Company Insurance policy documents and that of our subcontractors
  • Safe Isolation Kit – provided, and questioned about
  • Test Equipment – Provided and questioned about
  • Qualifications held by all operatives within the company and those held by our sub-contractors
  • Evidence of us having and using Safe isolation Procedure/ Best Practice Guide
  • Access to testers and providing evidence of all testing equipment within the company- I think he liked the fact we had spares and all the same brand J
  • How we record CPD for all operatives and sub-contractors
  • Evidence and provision of all professional documents (The regs books, guidance notes books etc)

Then Rob was required to answer question after and question- many of which I wouldn’t have been able to answer, but that’s why he’s our Qualifying Supervisor J

The site being tested (fortunately for us was an outside socket installed by the CTS Team) was then thoroughly inspected. Rob was questioned Extensively how would he do this? why would he do that? At what point would this happen? What would you do if this happened?

Now for anyone who does their job as well as Rob does, you generally just DO what you need to do, and trying to explain each step and explain why you are doing it this way and not that is really tricky! He did an exceptional job and handled things even better when the Tester had a funny five minutes and developed an intermittent fault. Just what you need on your first inspection when you’re nervous! NOT! Haha

It showed how thorough and knowledgeable Rob was and how important it was to have a reliable back up in case a problem arises, and we had the evidence the tester had only very recently been externally calibrated.

A few more gruelling questions where even Paul had to check the Regs books for the answers, so I think that’s pretty good!

We received a lot of praise as to our procedures, our filing, how well looked after the equipment we use is and our attention to detail. He recognised we hold ourselves accountable to keeping a very high standard of working both front of house and ALLLL the admin that goes along with it.

We did of course discuss how so many view this as an easy job to go into – I really hope that my sharing our account of how we operate at CTS, shows, that by no means is the Electrical Trade and “Easy” one to get into. We pride ourselves on our standards and passion and dedication and knowledge and I am so thoroughly pleased we managed to show that in our first of many Assessments today!
