Tips for UK Households

Changing your habits can help you save money on energy! With these simple energy-saving tips, you’ll see just how easy it is to cut the cost of your household electricity bill.

Turn It Off!

It sounds simple, but it’s something many of us forget. If you’re not using it, turn it off! Make sure to switch off appliances and chargers when they’re not in use. And if you’re not in a room, turn off the light! It’s a myth that turning a light on and off uses more energy than leaving it on. Nearly all electrical devices and appliances can be safely turned off at the plug.

A family could save around £45* a year just by remembering to turn things off.

Replace Your Bulbs

Are you still using incandescent or halogen lightbulbs? It’s time to switch! You can now get LED spotlights that are bright enough to replace your halogen bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for all your other light fittings.

Why make the change? In most homes, lighting accounts for around 11%* of the household electricity bill. According to the Energy Saving Trust, for each 50-watt halogen bulb you replace with an LED, you could save around £4 a year. By replacing all your bulbs with energy-saving ones, the amount saved could certainly add up!

Careful Cooking

Taking a little extra care in the kitchen can save you cash! Here are a few simple tips:

  • Use the right-sized pan for the food and hob.
  • Keep the saucepan lid on to retain heat.
  • Use the toaster to make toast, not the grill.
  • Only boil the amount of water you need in the kettle.

These small changes can add up to significant savings over time.

Wash Wisely

Don’t just take care with your delicates, whites, and colours; take care with your washing machine settings too. For clothes that have only been worn once and aren’t visibly dirty, try a 30°C wash. Anything more is often unnecessary and wastes energy.

And if it’s dry outside, why not use the washing line? Only use the tumble dryer when you really need to, such as on rainy days. You’ll soon notice a difference in your electricity bills.

By making these simple changes, you can save energy and money, helping both your wallet and the environment. Start implementing these tips today and enjoy the benefits of a more energy-efficient home.
